Piedmont Medical Center Completes 100 Mako SmartRobotics™ Surgeries

Jan 15, 2025

ROCK HILL, S.C., JANAURY 15, 2025 ― Piedmont Medial Center is proud to announce it has completed 100 surgeries across the Piedmont Market with the Mako SmartRobotics™ system.  This robotic system transforms the way total knee replacements, partial knee, and total hip, and partial hip replacements are performed, by helping surgeons with accuracy, which may lead to a faster recovery for the patient.

Patients who undergo joint replacement surgery using Mako SmartRoboticsTM may not only recover faster but may also experience less pain and have less blood loss than those who have undergone manual joint replacement surgery. Patients who have undergone the surgery have also been proven to have higher satisfaction through better functional outcomes.

“I’m incredibly proud of our surgeons and surgical staff for reaching this milestone of 100 Mako SmartRobotics™ surgeries, said Teresa Urquhart, Market CEO of Piedmont Medical Center. “Our Mako robotic system arrived at PMC – Fort Mill in November 2023 and a second robot arrived at PMC – Rock Hill in July 2024. With a committed staff, we were able to change the lives of 100 patients within a short period of time and I’m excited for what the future holds for orthopedic surgeries with this technology.”

“It is an honor to complete the 100th surgery within the Piedmont Market using the Mako SmartRobotics™. Having performed hundreds of knee and hip replacement surgeries, with this technology, I am confident it makes a difference in my patient's recovery and satisfaction following their procedure", said Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Brian D. Tallerico.  “Reaching this huge milestone is a testament to our surgical team members. Achieving this goal is a team effort and I’m honored to be a part of it.”

The Mako SmartRobotics™, system allows surgeons to plan a patient’s surgery, enabling a more predictable and personalized surgical experience when performing joint replacement surgery, while enhancing patient outcomes.
